We are looking for a highly talented Lead Senior IT Engineer to be a part of the Automation Services team within Illumina’s GIS (Corporate IT) organization.  You will be responsible for maintaining and developing software solutions for ever-evolving business challenges, working with key customers, and taking on lead responsibilities for a team of ~5.  Our group manages Illumina’s Developer Infrastructure (API gateway, Kubernetes, Log Analysis, Secrets Management) as well as in-house REST APIs focused on infrastructure automation.  We also develop automation/scripts using various languages, technologies, and platforms (Linux, Windows, AWS, Azure, etc.).  You will work in an environment that is collaborative, innovative, fun, and build relationships with software developers and infrastructure team members along the way.

Core Role Responsibilities

  • Support Developer Infrastructure Operations in a lead role
    • Monitor and address ServiceNow queue issues related to API Gateway, Kubernetes, Splunk, internal APIs, scripts, custom automation
  • Develop new automation based on customer requirements using a variety of technologies (python, powershell, c#, go, bash, etc.)
  • Develop automation in response to key operational challenges
  • Maintain unit tests and documentation for various services
  • Work closely with San Diego and UK based counterparts to coordinate efforts
  • Part of 24x7 global on-call rotation

Required Skills and Experience

  • Typically 7+ years of IT Infrastructure Operations experience plus experience/interest in a team lead or management role
  • Experience interviewing, training, and mentoring other engineers
  • Experience providing constructive feedback and coaching
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong technical background across a variety of technologies
  • Strong Python and scripting skills
  • Strong Linux system administration skills
  • Experience managing Kubernetes (k8s) infrastructure and deploying workloads
  • Experience with configuration management frameworks such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef
  • Development experience with Amazon Web Services offerings (S3, EC2, Lambda)
  • Experience with CI/CD platforms such as Jenkins, Team City, GoCD
  • Experience developing against various database platforms (Postgres, DynamoDB, Mongo)
  • Basic Windows administration
  • Experience with git
  • Self-motivated and able to solve problems independently and in team settings
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Strong analytical skills

Desired Skills

  • Experience with Python Flask, c#, powershell
  • Experience with HashiCorp Vault
  • Experience with logging frameworks like fluentd
  • Experience with Splunk/Graylog
